The quick answer
Whisk powdered sugar with fresh lemon juice and zest until it pours in a smooth ribbon. Drizzle over warm cinnamon rolls and let it set into a thin, glossy citrus glaze.
Cinnamon and lemon are an underrated pair, and this glaze proves it. Fresh lemon juice and a little zest cut through the butter and sugar of a warm roll, leaving a clean, tart finish that keeps you reaching for another bite. It comes together in a single bowl with nothing but a whisk: powdered sugar loosened with just enough juice to make it pour. Add zest for aroma and a pinch of salt to keep the tartness in balance, and drizzle it on while the rolls are still warm.

Ingredients
- powdered sugar1 cup (120 g)
- fresh lemon juice2 tbsp (30 g)
- lemon zest1 tsp
- fine saltpinch
Instructions
- 1Sift the powdered sugar into a medium bowl to break up any lumps.
- 2Add the lemon zest and a pinch of salt, then whisk in the lemon juice a little at a time until the glaze is smooth and pours in a thin ribbon.
- 3If it is too thick, add lemon juice a few drops at a time; if too thin, whisk in a little more powdered sugar.
- 4Drizzle over warm cinnamon rolls and let it set for a few minutes into a glossy finish.
Apply, adjust & store
- Best applied when
- rolls are warm, about 5 minutes out of the oven
- Storage
- Best made fresh and used within the hour, as citrus glaze can dull if it sits. Leftovers keep, covered, in the fridge up to 2 days; whisk before reusing. Glazed rolls are best the day they are made.
- Consistency adjustments
- For a thicker, more opaque icing, whisk in powdered sugar 1 tablespoon at a time. For a barely-there wash, thin with more lemon juice or a splash of water.
